Crave the milk
1 Peter 2:1-3
Today's reading: a short Bible passage, a reflection, a question to think about, and a prayer.
Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander.
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." Peter has just told scattered believers to rid themselves of malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and slander. That list is impossible on our own strength. So the very next picture he gives them is not a soldier or an athlete. It is a baby, hungry and held.
In the session, Willpog called this a humbling picture, because "we tend to try to be independent." A newborn is completely dependent on whoever is feeding, holding and caring for them. He heard encouragement in it too: people feel "they need to be 100% equipped to do what God has called them to do. And that's just not the case."
That is good news for anyone serving online. Nobody arrives in a Discord server, a Twitch chat or a prayer room fully equipped. You will meet questions you can't answer and people you don't know how to help. Peter does not ask you to be ready for all of it. He asks you to stay hungry for God, and to keep coming back to be fed.
Today, notice where you are trying to be strong and self-sufficient for God rather than dependent on him. Bring that place to him the way a baby comes to be fed, with nothing to prove. Read his word before you open the apps. You have tasted that the Lord is good, and he has more for you than you can carry alone.

Where are you trying to be fully equipped on your own, instead of depending on God to feed you?

Respond
Father, I confess I want to be strong and ready on my own. Make me hungry for your word like a newborn is for milk. Feed me today, grow me up in my salvation, and keep me close enough to depend on you. Amen.
