Grace in abundance, and a living hope
1 Peter 1:2-5
Listen
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,
who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Hear how verse 2 holds two things together. The exiles were chosen "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ." Then, in the same breath, Peter blesses them: "Grace and peace be yours in abundance." Obedience and grace arrive in one sentence. Willpog heard both in verse 2: these believers faced challenges and tribulations, "but also this grace this love," and "none of that was a mistake."
In the session, Ian Kirk said the phrase that struck him was "sanctified for obedience." When some of us started digital ministry before and during COVID, he explained, there was a part of it "that we only could do through obedience." But he couldn't leave it there. "We have to give grace to ourselves," he said, and he couldn't talk about obedience without God's grace and peace in abundance beside it.
Then Peter explains where that abundance comes from: "By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead," into an inheritance "imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you." These exiles had lost homes and standing. What God gives them can't be lost, spoiled or taken, and verse 5 says they themselves are "shielded by God's power."
Digital ministry runs on a lot of "I should." I should post more. I should reply faster. Obedience is real, but obedience fuelled only by guilt burns out. Peter's order matters: chosen, sanctified, sent to obey, and all of it held inside a living hope God has already secured. To apply it today, notice the "shoulds" you carry. Some are the Spirit's nudge; some are just pressure. Bring both to God, do the next faithful thing, and rest in a hope that doesn't depend on your output.

Which "should" in your ministry is the Spirit's call to obey, and which is pressure you need to hand back to God?

Respond
Father, by your great mercy you have given me a living hope. Show me the next faithful step and give me courage to take it. Where I am hard on myself, teach me to receive your grace and peace in abundance. Amen.
