The stone the builders rejected

1 Peter 2:6-8

Today's reading: a short Bible passage, a reflection, a question to think about, and a prayer.

For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”

To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”

and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word—and to this they were appointed.

"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Peter borrows the line from Psalm 118, a line Jesus applied to himself. The experts looked at him and passed him over. God set him at the corner where every other stone takes its line. Those who trust him, Peter promises, "will never be put to shame." The builders' verdict was not the final word.

In the session, the room talked honestly about how it feels to be overlooked as digital missionaries. David's Daily Show put it this way: "it's not that we were necessarily rejected, it's that we weren't even considered." Then he turned it toward hope: finding the space God gives you, and becoming a cornerstone right where you are.

If you serve in digital spaces, you may know that feeling. People don't quite know what you do, why you do it, or why it counts as ministry. Peter doesn't promise that the builders will come around. He points you to the stone they rejected, and reminds you that God, not the builders, decides which stones are precious and where each one goes. Your worth was settled at the cornerstone.

Today, if you feel unseen in the work God has given you, take it to him before you take it to anyone else. Ask him whether you are building on his cornerstone or on other people's approval. Then do the next faithful thing in front of you, whether anyone notices or not. The stone that was passed over carries the whole house.

Whose approval are you building on: the cornerstone God chose, or the builders who passed you over?

Respond

Lord Jesus, you were rejected and God made you the cornerstone. When I feel overlooked, keep me building on you. Free me from needing the approval of the builders, and let me serve faithfully wherever you have placed me. Amen.
